Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are set to be one of the biggest launches to date - here's all you need to know about the next great Android phone

Google is set to reveal its next smartphones, the Pixel and Pixel XL, next month.
Featuring the company's most powerful hardware and software to date, the two new devices look set to become a new must-have for Android fans. The launch of the two devices on October 4th will mark a major rebrand for Google's smartphone efforts, as the company looks to move away from its current Nexus products - so here's everything we know so far about the Pixel and Pixel XL.

What is Pixel?

Following a long period of success with its Nexus family of smartphones, Google has decided that it is time for a change.
The company is now set to release the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones as part of an ongoing rebrand of its mobile devices, which follows the release of the Pixel C laptop last year. Thought to be being built by either Huawei or HTC, the new smartphones will be Google's most powerful devices to date, featuring the latest version of the company's Android 7.1 Nougat software. Android 7.1 will bring a raft of improvements and feature updates to Google's latest mobile operating system, with several additions made especially for the Pixel and Pixel XL devices

Why should I care?

Google's previous phones have been very warmly received in the past, with the Nexus 6P and 5X devices, released last year, going on sale to rave reviews. The new devices should be another major step up, featuring more powerful hardware and software than their predecessors.
According to rumours, Google's 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL smartphones will pack some seriously powerful hardware, with a Snapdragon 821 rumoured to be fuelling the devices alongside 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The Pixel and Pixel XL will feature nearly edge-to-edge displays, with thinner bezels on the top and bottom of the device too. Both devices are also expected to boast boosted cameras, courtesy of a Sony IM378 sensor in the main rear camera and an IMX179 sensor on the front – equivalent to a 12MP and an 8MP camera respectively.

They will also support a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and reversible USB Type-C connection, allowing for speedy unlocking and charging.  Google is also reportedly planning black, white or silver and “Electric Blue” variations of the smartphones.  The phones are also rumoured to ship with an exclusive new Android Launcher that shuns the iconic App Drawer Instead, apps will be distributed across the Home Screen panels, like on Apple's iOS, and users will also be able to access the Google app when they swipe left from the main Home screen, and allow the Home screen to rotate automatically.     A system-wide easy-on-the-eyes Night Light Mode is also expected to feature in the updated Android software, alongside a permanent calendar widget and animated on-screen buttons. Google is also believed to be working on live wallpapers that bring additional functionality to the device.

When is it coming?
The Pixel and Pixel XL devices are set to be unveiled at an event on Tuesday, October 4th - and we will be be giving you live pictures from the update.
